India To Allow Patenting Of Embedded Software

Law360, New York (August 27, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a major victory for India’s burgeoning software industry, the country’s government is planning to allow software patents under limited conditions as part of a major overhaul of the country’s patent system.

Although patents by themselves would continue to be outside the purview of patenting, embedded software as well as software and hardware combinations would qualify for patents, if they fulfill specified novelty conditions, business daily the Economic Times of India reported Friday.
