AMA Asks DOJ To Block UnitedHealth Merger

Law360, New York (March 20, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The American Medical Association has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to block UnitedHealth Group Inc.’s proposed $2.6 billion takeover of Sierra Health Services, claiming it will give the health care company a monopoly in Nevada.

If the deal goes through, UnitedHealth will control 78% of the health maintenance organization insurance market statewide, including 95% of the market in Las Vegas, the AMA told U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez on Monday.
