Insurer Freed From Paying Tanning Co. Defense Costs

Law360, New York (November 11, 2010, 1:52 PM EST) -- Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. will not have to pay defense costs for a hide-tanning company in more than a dozen pollution lawsuits, a federal judge has ruled.

Chief Judge John A. Woodcock Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine ruled Wednesday that a pollution exemption in a series of insurance policies Liberty Mutual sold to Prime Tanning Co. relieves the insurer from its duty to defend the tanning company in over a dozen pollution lawsuits.
