India's Generic Industry Sounds Alarm Over Planned Patent Overhaul

Law360, New York (September 9, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- India’s generic drug industry has warned the government that a planned overhaul of the country’s patent law could lead to broad price hikes for essential drugs.

The chairman of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, Habil Khorakiwala, told the Hindu newspaper that the adoption of the amended patent bill could lead to “a chaotic situation as several companies would be forced to withdraw their brands from the market and the innovator entity will be able to jack up prices, hurting patients.”
