Greece Threatens To Veto Unilever-Ice Cream Co. Deal

Law360, New York (December 10, 2010, 5:20 PM EST) -- Greece's competition authority has threatened to veto consumer products giant Unilever PLC's planned buyout of a 76-year-old Greek ice cream brand's trademarks and distribution network, saying the acquisition might threaten competition.

The deal might lead to a significant impediment to effective competition, the Hellenic Competition Commission said Thursday.

Unilever announced in September that it would pay an undisclosed amount to acquire intellectual property and the distribution network of Evga SA, which would retain its production facilities under the deal. Now the proposed acquisition must go before...
