South Africa: Mittal Abused "Super Dominant" Power

Law360, New York (March 28, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The South African Competition Tribunal on Wednesday came down hard on Mittal Steel SA, finding the “super-dominant” company guilty of abusing its power and inflating prices, in a ruling that may lead to restructuring of the country’s steel industry.

Mittal’s control over the South African steel industry is so vast that it has no constraints on its business, and has the power to raise costs unilaterally and block the entry of new competition, the tribunal said in its scathing report.
