EU Pushes Unified Patent Plan For Some Nations

Law360, New York (December 14, 2010, 6:58 PM EST) -- The European Commission said Tuesday that it wanted to allow some member states — including the U.K., France and Germany — to move toward creating a unified patent protection scheme that could reduce the bloated translation costs associated with obtaining patents in Europe.

The proposed decision to authorize "enhanced cooperation" on unitary patent protection needs to win the approval of a qualified majority of the EU's Council of Ministers, after the consent of the European Parliament, the EC said.
