Bioethics Panel OKs Synthetic Bio, Urges Oversight

Law360, New York (December 16, 2010, 7:59 PM EST) -- President Barack Obama's bioethics commission on Thursday called for ongoing federal oversight of synthetic biology — the engineering of new organisms through manipulated or manufactured DNA — among various federal agencies, while noting that dangers stemming from synthetic biology appeared "far off in the future."

The Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues released a report Thursday providing 18 recommendations for monitoring the controversial new research field.
