Mine Fined $1.5M After Employee Deaths

Law360, New York (March 30, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Federal regulators have ordered a West Virginia coal mine to pay a record-setting $1.5 million for committing a slew of safety violations discovered after two employees died in a fire last year.

The penalty, the largest ever imposed on a coal mine, accounts for some 25 violations identified at Massey Energy Co.’s Aracoma Alma Mine No. 1 in Logan County, W. Va., the Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration said on Thursday.
