Massey To Close Ky. Mine Over Safety Issues

Law360, New York (January 5, 2011, 4:46 PM EST) -- Massey Energy Co. on Wednesday agreed to permanently shutter a Kentucky mine in order to settle a suit brought by the U.S. Department of Labor, which had cited more than 1,000 safety hazards at the site.

In a joint order approved by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, Massey Energy and the DOL stipulated a plan for permanently closing Freedom Energy Mining Co.'s Mine No. 1 over the next eight months.
