South Africa Nixes Exemption For Maize Export Pool

Law360, New York (January 11, 2011, 2:51 PM EST) -- South Africa's antitrust watchdog on Tuesday rejected Grain SA's bid for an exemption that would allow corn producers, who are struggling with falling prices and overproduction, to pool their products and set export prices during times of surplus.

Such an exemption would send domestic prices of cornmeal artificially high, the Competition Commission of South Africa said, adding the proposed scheme also was not a viable mechanism to promote exports.
