Sens. Call For Stiffer Health Care Fraud Penalties

Law360, New York (January 26, 2011, 7:32 PM EST) -- While members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee praised the U.S. Department of Justice on Wednesday for combating health care fraud, some lawmakers said the agency hadn't gone far enough in seeking prison sentences and called for more DOJ resources.

In a hearing chaired by Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., senators stressed the importance of creating strong disincentives to fraud by doling out stiff penalties and prison sentences, particularly in Medicare and Medicaid fraud.
