Newfoundland Sues Big Tobacco For Health Care Costs

Law360, New York (February 9, 2011, 2:04 PM EST) -- Newfoundland and Labrador has become the latest Canadian province to sue a multinational group of tobacco companies to recover past and future health care costs it has incurred treating smoking-related diseases.

Felix Collins, the province's minister of justice and attorney general, filed the suit Tuesday in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, one day after the province proclaimed the Tobacco Health Care Costs Recovery Act, which allows the provincial government to sue tobacco companies directly.
