House Committee Backs Bill Blocking Abortion Funding

Law360, New York (February 15, 2011, 6:02 PM EST) -- The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee on Tuesday passed a proposed ban on the federal funding of abortions through the health care reform law.

H.R. 358, the Protect Life Act, effectively applies limitations in the so-called Hyde amendment — a rider that has banned taxpayer subsidies of abortion under Medicaid — to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to supporters. The Republican-controlled panel reported the bill by a 33-19 vote.
