EU Lawmakers Advance Universal Patent Plans

Law360, New York (February 15, 2011, 5:32 PM EST) -- European Union lawmakers signed off Tuesday on a proposal to create a limited unified patent protection system in the 27-nation bloc, a major step forward in the EU's long-standing struggle to create a universal patent.

The European Parliament cleared the request to use "enhanced cooperation" to launch a single patent by a broad margin during Tuesday's vote, which largely ensures that a large group of EU members will be able to move forward with their plans.
