FDA Outlines Initiatives Inspired By DES 'Tragedy'

Law360, New York (February 24, 2011, 5:47 PM EST) -- Forty years after a link was established between the drug diethylstilbestrol and several cancers, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday declared the adverse effects of DES a “tragedy,” outlining new initiatives to prevent similar problems going forward.

New tools implemented since the DES disaster have made it easier to identify, monitor and mitigate drug risks to help catch and prevent other tragedies like those brought about by widespread use of DES, according to a letter sent by FDA Assistant Commissioner for Legislation Jeanne Ireland...
