BLM Must Improve Oil, Gas Well Risk Oversight: GAO

Law360, New York (February 28, 2011, 3:42 PM EST) -- The U.S. Government Accountability Office said in a report Friday that the Bureau of Land Management has failed to consistently implement policies for overseeing potential liabilities related to an increasing number of oil and gas wells on leased federal land.

The GAO said the agency, within the U.S. Department of the Interior, should tighten its handling of policies that cover reviews of the bonds that oil and gas operators must provide before beginning drilling operations and the management of idle and orphan wells.
