NIH To Study Health Of BP Spill Cleanup Workers

Law360, New York (March 1, 2011, 5:44 PM EST) -- A branch of the National Institutes of Health launched a massive study Monday that will examine the health effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on 55,000 cleanup workers and volunteers.

Data from the 10-year study — the largest of its kind ever to be conducted among such responders — could help inform policy decisions on health services in the region and influence response efforts for future oil spills, the NIH said in announcing the study's start across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.
