FDA Cracks Down On Unapproved Cold, Cough Drugs

Law360, New York (March 2, 2011, 1:57 PM EST) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered that about 500 cold, cough and allergy prescription drugs be removed from the market Wednesday, saying the medications had not been approved for safety and effectiveness under current health regulations.

The move is the 17th enforcement action by the FDA under a 2006 initiative to reduce the number of unapproved drugs on the market. Many of the drugs subject to Wednesday's order were first sold to consumers before the current drug regulations went into effect.
