Senate Blocks Medicare Drug Bill

Law360, New York (April 18, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A bill that would have allowed the government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to secure lower prices for those covered by the Medicare program has been blocked by the Senate, failing to pass by just five votes.

Although six Republican senators voted for the Democratic Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act of 2007, the 55-42 vote left the bill short of the 60 votes needed to invoke cloture.
