WIPO To Convene Summit To Examine Development Proposal

Law360, New York (October 4, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The World Intellectual Property Organization has agreed to examine a proposal to shift its focus toward development goals, but made no direct concessions at its general-assembly meetings to an initiative by Latin American countries to soften intellectual property rights in developing countries.

The general assembly of the United Nations body, which met in Geneva last week, said it “welcomed” the initiative and would convene intergovernmental meetings to examine the proposal more closely.
