Utah University Sues Planck, MIT Over RNA Patents

Law360, New York (March 23, 2011, 3:51 PM EDT) -- The University of Utah filed a lawsuit against several institutions Tuesday in Massachusetts, claiming one of its scientists invented the genetic treatment technology recently at the heart of litigation in the scientific community.

The complaint, lodged in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, alleges that Dr. Brenda Bass, a distinguished professor at the university, discovered an RNA interference system, or RNAi, well before the named inventors of the patents, which are now slated for sublicense to Merck & Co.
