Judge Enters Permanent Injunction Vs. Medtronic Units In Patent Suit

Law360, New York (October 13, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal judge has barred Medtronic Sofamor Danek, Inc. and Medtronic Sofamor Danek USA, Inc. from selling screws used with spinal implants that infringe a Biomet Inc. patent.

The unfavorable decision represents a double whammy for Medtronic, which was ordered Tuesday to pay $400 million in punitive damages to the doctor who invented some of its spinal fusion technologies, bringing the total value of the verdict in that patent infringement lawsuit to more than $1 billion by some estimates.
