NRC Official Vouches For Safety Of US Nuclear Plants

Law360, New York (April 6, 2011, 3:24 PM EDT) -- Industry representatives and a top official at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission assured lawmakers Wednesday that American nuclear plants continue to operate safely, and are more prepared for a disaster than their counterparts in Japan.

In testimony before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, NRC Deputy Executive Director Martin J. Virgilio said none of the 104 licensed American reactors were located in the same type of tsunami risk zone as Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex.
