House Dems Seek To End Royalty-Free Gulf Drilling

Law360 (April 5, 2011, 4:52 PM EDT) -- Democratic congressional leaders on Tuesday reintroduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives that would end royalty relief for oil companies holding drilling leases in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Deficit Reduction through Fair Royalties Act would prohibit the U.S. Department of the Interior from issuing new oil or natural gas production leases in the Gulf — authorized under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act — to any entity that does not renegotiate existing leases to require royalty payments, as long as oil and natural gas...
