Liberty Sanctions Over Asbestos Coverage Deal Upheld

Law360 (April 5, 2011, 6:01 PM EDT) -- A North Carolina appeals court on Tuesday upheld sanctions against Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. for sending negotiators without decision-making power to an asbestos litigation settlement conference with SPX Corp.

A three-judge panel of the North Carolina Court of Appeals said a trial judge did not abuse his discretion when he ordered sanctions against the insurer after it backed out of a court-negotiated deal.
