Women Lawyers Less Valued, Lower Billing Rates Show

Law360, New York (April 11, 2011, 7:41 PM EDT) -- A recent survey that revealed a wide discrepancy between male and female attorneys' billing rates reflects a culture at law firms that undervalues women and fails to encourage them to become rainmakers, experts said.

Male lawyers on average had a billing rate of $312, while the rate for women was just $259, according to ALM Legal Intelligence's survey of billing rates and practices of attorneys in 176 small and midsize firms across the nation.
