EU Watchdog To Give Cartel Fine Info Sooner: Almunia

Law360, New York (April 14, 2011, 6:22 PM EDT) -- The European Commission will begin giving companies accused of violating European antitrust laws information about the size of the fines they may face earlier in the investigation process, Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said Thursday.

While the European Union's antitrust chief highlighted the regulator's efforts to refine its fining guidelines, he said penalties would remain high in order to deter companies from engaging in anti-competitive behavior.
