DOT Cracks Down On Airport Tarmac Waits, Fees

Law360, New York (April 20, 2011, 5:33 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Transportation finalized a rule Wednesday expanding limits on lengthy tarmac waits and requiring airlines to disclose all fees, refund baggage fees if they lose luggage and increase compensation for bumped passengers.

The new rule broadens a mandate issued in December 2009 that prohibited airlines from keeping passengers on a delayed plane for more than three hours on domestic flights, and comes in response to delays experienced at New York’s JFK Airport during a blizzard a year later.
