DOJ Forces Changes To Novell-Microsoft Group IP Deal

Law360 (April 20, 2011, 5:27 PM EDT) -- A joint venture of technology giants has agreed to change its $450 million deal to acquire hundreds of Linux-related patents from Novell Inc. to mitigate concerns the sale would limit competition from open source software, U.S. regulators said Wednesday.

CPTN Holdings LLC — a short-term joint venture owned equally by Microsoft Corp., Apple Inc., Oracle Corp. and EMC Corp. — agreed in November to buy 882 patents and patent applications from Novell as a key part of the company's $2.2 billion sale to Attachmate Corp....
