ICC Protests Proposed Australian Tobacco Label Ban

Law360, New York (April 26, 2011, 6:22 PM EDT) -- The International Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to Australia's government Thursday criticizing a piece of draft legislation that would mandate plainer cigarette packaging devoid of brand designs, saying the move would be detrimental to brand protection.

The proposal creates a dangerous precedent that could have far-reaching impact on the use of trademarks and other intellectual property in Australia and around the globe, ICC Secretary General Jean-Guy Carrier said in a letter to Australian Trade Minister Craig Emerson.
