Philippines Seeks To Invalidate Pfizer Patent

Law360, New York (May 8, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal appeals court ruling last month which invalidated a patent covering Pfizer Inc.’s blockbuster hypertension drug Norvasc has spawned an effort to invalidate the patent in the Philippines.

The Philippine International Trading Corp., a federal agency in charge of importing drugs, filed a petition with the Intellectual Property Office Tuesday to nullify the patent granted to Pfizer for amlodipine besylate, Norvasc’s active ingredient.

The petition is supported by Oxfam International “in the light of Pfizer’s fraudulent claim of invention,” according to a PITC press release....
