US Seeks To Block Enviros' Say In Arch Coal Settlement

Law360, New York (May 2, 2011, 7:19 PM EDT) -- U.S. attorneys urged a West Virginia federal judge on Monday to approve a $4 million settlement in a Clean Water Act suit against Arch Coal Inc. and its affiliates, and to stem the influence of conservation groups seeking to join the case.

The government asked the court to enter a March 1 consent decree, under which Arch Coal and several others have agreed to pay $4 million in penalties and modify their mining operations, over objections by the Sierra Club and a pair of regional organizations....
