FDA Gains More Power Over Potentially Unsafe Food

Law360, New York (May 4, 2011, 6:39 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration rolled out the first new regulations under the Food Safety Modernization Act on Wednesday, saying they give the agency greater leeway to detain potentially unsafe foods and require more information from food importers.

The sweeping food safety law introduced in January handed the FDA new authority to order a recall of tainted food without obtaining producers' consent. The legislation will likely lead to to a significant rise in the number of food safety facility inspections.
