Diverse EU Cookies Policies Pose Risks For Compliance

Law360, New York (August 22, 2011, 1:37 PM EDT) -- Companies scrambling to meet new rules requiring European Union websites to obtain user consent for cookies will need to be creative in crafting a compliance strategy for the divergent policies of 27 member states, attorneys say.

Under an amendment to the EU's 2002 e-privacy directive, website operators that target the EU market must change their rules to obtain active and informed consent from users before placing a cookie or similar technologies for storing information on their websites.
