EU To Impose Ban On Cadmium In Jewelry, Plastics

Law360, New York (May 20, 2011, 3:50 PM EDT) -- The European Commission announced Friday that it would ban heavy metal cadmium in the manufacturing and importation of all plastics, jewelry and brazing sticks beginning in December, citing health risks.

Regulators said that high levels of the metal, which is a carcinogen and is toxic in water, had been found in imported imitation jewelry, in polyvinyl chloride piping and construction materials, and in brazing sticks, which are used to solder metal components together.
