FDA Issues Warning About Thickening Agent

Law360, New York (May 24, 2011, 5:22 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned Friday that parents, caregivers and health care providers should not feed liquid thickening agent SimplyThick to premature infants because it may cause a life-threatening condition called necrotizing enterocolitis.

The FDA said it is aware of 15 cases of necrotizing enterocolitis, which inflames and destroys intestinal tissue, in infants who were fed SimplyThick mixed with mothers' breast milk or baby formula. Two of those infants died.
