Massey Faces $1.9B Fine For Pollution

Law360, New York (May 14, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking more than $1.9 billion in fines from Massey Energy Co., alleging the company’s West Virginia and Kentucky coal mining operations polluted the drinking water of Central Appalachia.

The DOJ filed a lawsuit on Friday on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, accusing Massey and 27 of its subsidiaries of exceeding the pollution limits of the Clean Water Act.
