DOE Pushes Small Nuclear Plants In Senate Hearing

Law360, New York (June 7, 2011, 3:31 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Energy told a Senate panel Tuesday that small nuclear power plants offer safety and competition advantages over larger counterparts currently operating around the country, following a Nuclear Regulatory Commission report that found many operators lacked up-to-date safety guidelines.

DOE Deputy Assistant Secretary John Kelly told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee that so-called small modular reactors possess inherent safety features worth considering in the wake of Japan’s nuclear crisis that could help the U.S. phase out aging fossil fuel plants....
