FDA Takes First Step Toward Regulating Nanotechnology

Law360, New York (June 9, 2011, 6:39 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday announced draft guidance about the use of nanotechnology by industries the agency regulates, calling it the “first step” in determining whether products contain the emerging technology.

While the guidance does not create a regulatory definition for nanotechnology, which is the use of materials made up of particles a billionth of a meter in size, it intends to give industry stakeholders an idea of the FDA's thinking as it identifies whether regulated products contain this technology.
