EU To End Coal Subsidies In 2010

Law360, New York (May 21, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Commission confirmed on Monday that the EU will likely cease by 2010 to permit member states to give out subsidies in the coal industry, which was long unprofitable in certain states that are now competive in the coal market.

"After 2010, this is going to be over. State aid for coal will be under the same regime as any other state aid,” said a spokesperson for EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
