FDA Issues Warning Over Avandia Amid Outcry

Law360 (May 21, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety warning on Avandia, concerned that the popular diabetes drug significantly boosts the risk of heart attack and heart-related deaths.

On Monday, the FDA tossed out a stiff caution regarding the GlaxoSmithKline medication, which is primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes.

“Safety data from controlled clinical trials have shown that there is a potentially significant increase in the risk of heart attack and heart-related deaths in patients taking Avandia,” the statement said.
