DOI Weighs Ban On New Grand Canyon Uranium Mining

Law360, New York (June 20, 2011, 7:42 PM EDT) -- U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said Monday that the agency planned to place a 20-year moratorium on new uranium mining in a 1-million-acre tract of federal land along the Grand Canyon.

In remarks delivered from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, Salazar said he was directing the Bureau of Land Management to prioritize the withdrawal of uranium claims in preparing its final environmental impact statement on mineral mining in the region.
