Ohio House OKs Bill To Allow Major Lake Erie Withdrawals

Law360, New York (June 23, 2011, 7:18 PM EDT) -- The Ohio House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill to implement the multistate Great Lakes Basin Compact by setting up a permit program for major water withdrawals from Lake Erie.

The compact is an agreement on new conservation standards between the eight Great Lake states — Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio and Wisconsin — along with Canadian provinces Ontario and Quebec.

The House voted 60-39 to pass H.B. 231, which would require permits only for facilities that draw at least 5 million gallons...
