Supreme Court To Hear Calif. Slaughter Case

Law360, New York (June 27, 2011, 1:37 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a suit challenging a California law banning the slaughter and inhumane handling of sick and disabled farm animals.

The case, National Meat Association v. Harris, is on appeal from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The National Meat Association, a trade association representing pork packers and processors, has argued the the California law is preempted by the Federal Meat Inspection Act.
