Target Loses Bid To Change Canadian Chain's Name

Law360, New York (June 27, 2011, 7:33 PM EDT) -- A Canadian judge on Thursday struck a blow to Target Corp.'s push to shore up its brand in Canada, rejecting its bid to ban a Canadian retailer from using the name “Target Apparel” pending a trademark infringement trial.

Target, which plans to begin opening stores in Canada for the first time in 2013, sued Fairweather Ltd. and its affiliates in November, claiming the company's Target Apparel stores hurt its brand and should be renamed.
