Asbestos Kept Off UN Treaty's Hazardous Chemical List

Law360, New York (June 28, 2011, 5:29 PM EDT) -- Members of a global chemical treaty could not agree to include chrysotile asbestos on a list of hazardous substances triggering disclosure obligations, but they did add three new pesticides, United Nations officials announced Monday.

By the end of a five-day meeting that grew tense as members debated chrysotile asbestos, the 141-member Rotterdam Convention, which does not include the U.S., could not agree to add the mineral to a list of hazardous chemicals triggering disclosure obligations for exporting countries, the U.N. said.
