Japanese Life-Science Patent Filings Soar

Law360, New York (November 5, 2003, 12:00 AM EST) -- Japanese patent applications in the field of life sciences grew sharply in 2001 and 2002, a repor from the Patent Office showed, according to Jiji Press.

Such patent applications rose 34.4% in every half-year period between the beginning of 2001 and the end of 2002, the patent office reported.

Of these applications, 72% were made by large companies while only 3% were filed by venture firms. In the U.S., 45% of the patent applications were filed by venture firms and 21% by big companies.
