Depakote May Cause Cognitive Defects, FDA Warns

Law360, New York (July 1, 2011, 6:41 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned Thursday that women who take anti-seizure drug Depakote while pregnant are at increased risk of giving birth to children with cognitive impairments.

At age three, children whose mothers were on Depakote or another valproate sodium-based drug throughout their pregnancy scored lower on IQ tests than a control group whose mothers took other anti-seizure medications, the FDA said.
