Va. Official Backs Fracking In National Forest

Law360, New York (July 8, 2011, 5:48 PM EDT) -- A Virginia energy official told federal lawmakers Friday that a U.S. Forest Service proposal to ban horizontal drilling in hydraulic fracturing on 1 million acres of national forest would hamper economic growth and restrict access to valuable natural gas resources.

Maureen Matsen, Virginia’s deputy director of natural resources and senior energy adviser, said the service’s proposal was unjustified given Virginia’s history of fracking and the state’s clean record on fracking-related water contamination.
